A Wagner Matinee at Merce Cunnigham Studio
April 3, 10 and 11, New York, NY
Two years ago, choreographer Laura Diffenderfer of Oh Dear Dance Theatre and I worked together in creating A Wagner Matinee, an evening-length work based on Willa Cather’s short story of the same name. The work had its premiere in Cather’s home town of Red Cloud, Nebraska in 2008 and we have revised it for its New York premiere on April 3, 10 and 11 at the Merce Cunningham Studios. My contribution is music and sound design that includes samples of Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, solo piano (a minimalist deconstruction of Tristan and Isolde’s famous opening chords) and found percussion including antique farm equipment from Nebraska. I will be performing percussion and electronics and Mike Cassedy of Build will be performing piano and percussion.
