A Wagner Matinee at Merce Cunnigham Studio
April 3, 10 and 11, New York, NY
Two years ago, choreographer Laura Diffenderfer of Oh Dear Dance Theatre and I worked together in creating A Wagner Matinee, an evening-length work based on Willa Cather’s short story of the same name. The work had its premiere in Cather’s home town of Red Cloud, Nebraska in 2008 and we have revised it for its New York premiere on April 3, 10 and 11 at the Merce Cunningham Studios. My contribution is music and sound design that includes samples of Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, solo piano (a minimalist deconstruction of Tristan and Isolde’s famous opening chords) and found percussion including antique farm equipment from Nebraska. I will be performing percussion and electronics and Mike Cassedy of Build will be performing piano and percussion. www.ohdeardance.org

A Wagner Matinee: Premiere
June 7, 2008, Sat, Red Cloud Opera House, Red Cloud, Nebraska
A hour-long dance theater piece that mixes video, music, photography and dance, overlaying personal narrative atop Willa Cather’s short story “A Wagner Matinee”. This piece is conceived and choreographed by Laura Diffenderfer of Oh Dear Dance Theatre and I’ve composed music for it that includes minimalist-ish piano music based on the harmonies from the prelude to Tristan und Isolde, sampled and processed Wagner recordings, water and buckets and the husking of corn as percussion instruments, and prerecorded sounds of the Nebraskan countryside.
